In The Beginning... It all began when a Lithuanian immigrant, named John Ardziewicz came to Deerfield in 1910. He had been living in a neighboring town at the time when he purchased a small farm on Lower Road in Deerfield, Massachusetts, consisting of 25 acres of land, more or less. He worked the land of this small vegetable farm with the help of his son, John, raising tobacco, onions, carrots, corn and potatoes. At some point during the 1930's, young John made the decision to change his name to "Savage", thus the first of three generations to have the name John G. Savage and to work the family farm in Deerfield. During his many years on the farm John purchased more land along Lower Road and the Deerfield River, eventually focussing primarily on raising tobacco and potatoes on the 300 acres they now owned. His eldest son, John G. Savage, Jr., helped on the farm and as a young boy often preferred working over going to school. After graduating from Deerfield Academy and then from the University of New Hampshire in 1963, John, Jr. added a new crop to the farm - sod! In 1969, the most recent John G. Savage, better known as "Jay", was born into the family. Since graduating from Proctor Academy and Vermont Technical College's AG program, Jay and his father, John, manage 350 acres of potatoes, 130 acres of sod and another 40 - 50 acres of rotational crops. Sod...Even though sod is the most recent crop added to the farm we have more than 35 years of experience in growing and selling turf. Savage Farms offers the finest bluegrass blends available. We offer primarily a bluegrass product because it is a hardy turf that tends to thrive in our New England climate. We supply sod to homeowners as well as to landscapers, garden centers, municipalities, and golf courses. No order is to big or to small! Potatoes...Savage Farms raises various potato varieties used specifically for making potato chips. The next time you crunch on a chip from Frito-Lay, UTZ, or Cape Cod Chips you may be eating a Savage Spud from Deerfield! As an active member of the National Potato Board, Jay is currently the Massachusetts state representative. For some fun facts about potatoes and some great new recipes visit www.potatohelp.com
