Sod & Turf from Savage Farms of Deerfield MA

How is sod sold?
When you place your order, sod is sold either by the square foot or by the roll, depending on your needed quantity. Each small roll of sod is 2-feet wide by 5-feet long, while the "Big Rolls" each are 4-feet wide by 50-feet long.

How thick is each piece of sod?
Each piece of sod is cut 1/2" to 3/4" thick, the thickness of the rootmat. If you are installing your sod next to a sidewalk or driveway, keep the grade of your soil surface 1/2" to 3/4" below the side of the walk or driveway.

How far in advance should I place my order?
If you plan to pick up sod at the farm, please call 413.774.4395 to place your order the day before. Please let us know at least 3 days to a week in advance if you need sod delivered. The earlier you place your order, the easier it is to accommodate your delivery request.

What forms of payment can I use?
We accept cash, checks, Visa and Mastercard for payment at pickup or upon delivery.

How do I prepare my site and install my sod?

Begin by removing any existing grass or rototill the area. Rake the soil smooth, removing rocks, roots and large clods. Roll the area with a lawn roller to create a firm surface. You may consider applying and raking in a starter fertilizer. These fertilizers can be purchased from Savage Farms or at most garden centers.

Install your sod immediately upon delivery. Begin at the longest straight line, butting and pushing edges and ends tightly against each other, avoiding stretching, gaps or overlays. Stagger the joints in each row in a brick-like fashion, using a large, sharp knife to trim corners and edges. Avoid leaving small strips at the other edges, as they will not retain moisture. On sloped areas, place turf pieces across the slope.

Begin watering the new sod within 30 minutes of installation. Many forget that turf is a living plant that requires ground contact and moisture to survive.

How much water does my new lawn need?
Give at least an inch of water to your new lawn with 30 minutes of installation. Water daily or more often, depending on weather conditions, keeping the turf most until it's firmly rooted, which should occur within two weeks.

How do I maintain my newly sodded lawn?
Mow often, removing no more than 1/3 of the grass height during each mow. Fertilizer and chemical applications depend on climate, soil, insects, weeds and disease conditions. Check your local garden center for a lawn maintenance program.
